Week 7 Prompt {Hoax Memoirs}

Go Ask Alice

When I was a junior in high school, I think, I read Go Ask Alice. It's probably safe to say I devoured the book. I loved it. I haven't read it since, and I doubt I will ever go back and reread it, but there was something about it at that point in my life that spoke to me. I can't say what it was for sure, as I couldn't relate to anything she was specifically going through (drug use, homelessness, prostitution, etc), but I'm sure I there were themes of loneliness and depression which were rampant in my teenage years. I remember specifically when I found out that it wasn't a "real" memoir. The crushing disappointment, the sadness, the feeling like I just wasted my time. It took some time to realize that it didn't take the meaning away from the story, however. The story, as Somers says, is "more layered and brutal than you might imagine". I do believe that keeps it going despite it being a hoax.

  1. I know how yo feel, especially if you really like the book. You feel like you have been cheated and it wasted your time. But, again if it gave what you needed at that time, whether insight or just entertainment, it served its purpose. I personally just don't like to be deceived; just tell me upfront whether it is fiction or not.

    1. I think that might have been my issue - feeling lied to. I have major issues with being lied to and that's what it boiled down to. I got over it and could look at it for what it was, but I definitely felt slighted at the time.

  2. I just read a great article on this book and the dark truth behind it (the author wrote lots of other "memoirs" ) and it was soo disheartening. This book scared me away from drugs more than any DARE program! Full points!

    1. Yes! That is such a true statement! I nearly feel like it should be required reading for that reason, but I can only imagine how many parents would balk at that idea! I own it, personally, and at some point in the next few years I will move it the shelves that my kids choose from as well. Just so it's available should they want it.
